Elk mountain via Elk creek : Tillamook forest

Starting Point: Elk mountain via Elk creek campground
Distance: 12 miles round trip
Date: 9-3-2011
Min Elev: 700 ft
Max Elev: 3226 ft
Season: All Year
Difficulty: Medium
Backpackable: No - Trail is too narrow and no random camp spots
Crowded: At times

Directions:
Travel Oregon Highway 6 to milepost 28. Turn north onto Elk Creek Road and continue through the campground to the trailhead across the bridge. During the winter, the campground is gated off, but ample parking is available at the road intersection (the closure only ads maybe a quarter mile to the trail).

We checked the map at the trail head which was kind of vague on which path actually took you to where you wanted to go.

We decided on going the Elk creek trail

It was very easy going for the first part, The river running right next to you until you got a little higher. Be sure to bring drinks and snacks as there wasn't any water source off the trail that we saw.

We stopped to enjoy this random rock formation to find out there was a bee's nest just under it!

As you climb higher the view starts to open up at about the 4.5 mile mark

Due to time constraints we ended up heading back down before we hit the very top.  Overall it was a very nice hike with very few people on the trail for such a popular one.
